Power Through Challenges

May I offer you a challenge?”, “Would you like to take on a challenge?”, “How about I challenge you to XYZ?” Are you feeling intrigued? Are you feeling a little curious? We have not even talked about what the actual challenge is and your interest is peaked. There is something special about the word “challenge”. The moment the word “challenge” is put out there, there is feeling of excitement, nervousness, and an “I’ll show you” attitude. There is a part of us that is excited and nervous about what the next words will be. We are thinking “What will the Challenge BE?!” At the same time, we are also thinking, “You don’t know me, what makes you think I cannot do what you are going to challenge me with? I’ll show you!” Therefore, most will like to hear what the challenge is and will likely strongly consider doing the challenge. At the very least, for a split second we would think about what it would be like to do the challenge and succeed in the challenge. When you look at all the achievements, successes and anything that you are proud of, most likely than not you took on a challenge and succeeded. Whether it is a challenge that someone offered up to you or a challenge that you set for yourself, the result of all challenges whether you succeed or fail is positive. When it comes to Make More Work Less, saying YES to challenges definitely unlocks your potential and allows you to achieve more than you have ever dreamed of.

Challenge Yourself

Think something you are extremely proud of. Did you win a competition? Are you a successful business owner? Did you go skydiving? Anything that you do started off as something that was unknown to you. There was some fear behind that decision. What if you don’t win? What if the business fails? What if you get hurt? However, in your mind you made the decision that it was something you wanted to do and therefore you challenged yourself to do it. Now that you have succeeded in it, it was a challenge that you wished you took on earlier or a story that you are proud to share all the time.

Looking back, investing in real estate was one of the biggest changes in our lives. The very first offer we put out there was one of the scariest moments we had ever experienced. We knew the numbers and we knew that we would have gotten a great deal if it was accepted, but the action of putting an official offer on a property was so far out of our comfort zone that we were afraid that it would be accepted! So why did we do it? It is because we challenged ourselves. We made the decision that real estate will be a part of our lives in some shape or form and therefore we challenged ourselves to have at least one property within our first month. With that challenge came building a team of professionals, putting out offers, and finding money partners. Every step of the way provided us with learning opportunities and growth to the point where we accumulated a portfolio of real estate investments. It is a challenge that we are happy to have taken on.

From a personal health perspective, we challenged ourselves to be in better shape. I have always put marathon runners on a pedestal, thinking there was no way I would ever be able to run a full marathon. Then we heard of a very unique challenge, from one of the happiest places on earth – WALT DISNEY WORLD. The challenge is called the Dopey Challenge, where you run 5 kilometers on Thursday morning, 10 kilometers on Friday morning, a half marathon on Saturday morning, and then finally a full marathon on Sunday morning all while running in the actual parks! Talk about being DOPEY enough to take this challenge on! Now being huge Disney fans we decided that if we were ever going to do a marathon that we wouldn’t want to do it anywhere else but in Walt Disney World, and hence we challenged ourselves to get into shape and do the Dopey Challenge. The challenge led to training, to running, to finally completing the 4 races in 4 days all while enjoying the parks. Completing that challenge taught us a lot about ourselves and the importance of focus, persistence, and what we can do. If there is anything that you have always wanted to achieve but have not for whatever reason, challenge yourself and make it fun.

Accept Challenges

Taking on challenges can take you out of your comfort zone and conquer your fears. One of the best ways to take on challenges is to be offered challenges by those who support you and want you to succeed. Surround yourself with likeminded individuals, people who can hold you accountable, and more importantly can challenge you to succeed.

One of my biggest obstacles was to record videos and post them online. I would have no issues speaking or performing on stages while someone is recording me, but once I was to look at a camera and talk, my mind breaks down. I would constantly stutter, forget my point, or lose my thoughts completely. No matter what I did, I was not able to shake that problem. I went as far as to find a condition to justify my inability to do videos. The condition is called “ego depletion” where once you have cameras on you, you subconsciously feel that you need to be perfect. You would put so much pressure on yourself to be perfect that you eventually break down and make mistakes. It is this concept that makes reality TV so successful. Producers wait until the cast breaks down and then use that footage for the show. For the longest time I was convinced that I will never do videos due to this condition. In fact, I would tell people that I have a condition and therefore would not be able to do interviews or speak in front of a camera. I convinced myself that that was the case, until I joined a mastermind.

During masterminds, members share their struggles so that other members can offer up suggestions or strategies to solve the problem. I was taken by surprise as to what was to happen next after I shared my “condition”. One member stood up and laid down a challenge. “Fong, I challenge you to do one 2-3 mins video a week for a year on any topic you want, as long as it’s posted.” Shortly after that challenge was offered, another member stood up and said: “If you take on the challenge then I will too.” Before I knew it there was 4 of us on this challenge doing one video a week for a year. One member went as far as doing a video LIVE on the spot and walking over to the others introducing them and the challenge to the audience, me included. Not wanting to fall behind the other members, I made sure I did everything I could to produce one video a week. This was the start to my weekly series Make More Mind Bites, which can be found on our YouTube channel yourareaTV. Well, that was over 400 videos ago! Accepting that challenge absolutely changed my life and opened up so many more opportunities, from being interviewed to hosting my very own podcast. What was shocking to me was that I was the only one who actually completed the challenge. Years later, I found out that the member that said he would do it too, had no intention of doing it, he just wanted to see if I would. I am grateful for the challenge because of all the new opportunities and confidence I have gained.

Challenge Others

Taking on challenges will definitely change your life. The more challenges you take, the more life changing experience you will have. Now imagine if you were the one to offer up those challenges and help others gain experiences and successes they have never dreamed of. During the writing of this in 2020, we are in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Offices were closed, shops were shut down, people worked from home, and sadly some lost their jobs. This period of time, being a challenge in itself, was an opportunity for those who chose to accept it. I reached out to my clients and said: “You can use this time and complain about everything that is happening, watch TV, and wait for things to turn around; or you can use this time to build up to your skills and credibility, and come out of this lockdown ready to sprint!” My challenge to some of my top clients was to start writing a book, have it published, and in hand in less than 4 months. These are clients who had no writing background, no previous content, and never even thought about writing a book. With this challenge, 80% of them completed their books from scratch, achieved Amazon bestseller status, and created credibility and exposure for themselves that can never be taken away. Their confidence became stronger, their self-esteem was enlightened, some got featured in local papers, and some were asked to speak on virtual conferences that were hosted in Paris and Ghana!

Those who took on the challenge have come back again and again to thank me for changing their lives and picking them for the challenge.

No Failure in Challenges

Every time you take on a challenge, it is an opportunity for the taking. When you achieve the challenge you will gain confidence, experience, and pride . With the heightened confidence, you will take on more challenges and the growth will be exponential! Even if you don’t complete the challenge the way you expected to, you would have gotten experience from it. You learn from it and you adjust so that when you take on the challenge again, you are more likely to succeed. When it comes to taking challenges that will allow you to grow, there is no downside. It is the education that you cannot pay for. Taking the positives and learning opportunities from the incomplete/failed challenges are some of the greatest advantages of taking on challenges.

Saying “YES” to challenges will get you closer to Making More and Working Less, than saying “NO” will ever get you. Challenge yourself, take on challenges from others, and offer challenges to others, all while having fun doing it. My challenge to you is: “Take on a challenge and grow!”

Until next time, today is the day to unlock your potential. I’ll see You later.
